Loss of Memory After Traumatic Brain Injury

Each function of the brain may result from traumatic brain injury inattention, impaired concentration, abnormal excessive sleepiness, slowed down the wrong pronunciation depression, irritability, emotional outbursts, and thoughts. However, the loss of memory is one of the most common cognitive side effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Even in mild head injury loss of memory is still very common. The most serious victim of memory loss after head trauma, the greater the brainDamage is more likely.

Some of TBI-related amnesia, patients do not remember what happened before, during and after the head injury is temporary. Temporary memory loss is often caused by swelling of the brain in response to permanent damage. But because the brain is pushed against the skull, parts that are not violated does not work in the situation. The memory of the patient, usually as the swelling follows a period of weeks oralso last for months. Temporary loss of memory can also be an emotional reaction to stressful events associated with TBI.

Damage to the nerves and axons (the connection between nerves) of the brain may also cause memory loss. The brain can not heal itself like an arm or a leg, so that every function that is compromised during a TBI is permanently damaged when the brain learns this task differently. Fixed amnesia may be the loss of some common meanings, everyday objects or words, or a person, I can not remember the skills they had before the TBI.

Another type of memory loss and amnesia anteretrograde, the inability to remember events that happened after the injury. Doctors are not sure exactly why this happens, but research has shown that there is something wrong with the fact that TBI to reduce the level of a protein in the brain, the brain may have helped balance his activities. Without sufficientthis particular protein, may be affected, the brain simply overloads and memory formation.

In general, it should reduce the symptoms of brain damage over time with the repair of the brain, but sometimes the symptoms get worse, because failure of patients to adapt to trauma. It is not uncommon for psychological symptoms and disturbances caused by lesions brain.

Currently there is no treatment for memory lossFollowing TBI, when the store does not return to his right, will be irretrievably lost. This is a great need for research in the field of TBI and loss of memory, but unfortunately there is no cure for TBI-related amnesia in this moment.
